Our Usability & Interaction Lab

The lab is widely used for teaching and research purposes and provides the tools and the technology for collaborative work.

What to do here

The Lab

Our lab is our social focal point and allows you to easily get in touch with us. The lab is widely used for teaching and research purposes. It provides the tools to collaboratively work together and the technology to create novel interaction designs. We also use it to run user studies and experiments for our research projects.

If you attend a course, there is a good chance, you will also work in the lab. If you do, please keep it as nice as possible, so that others can enjoy it too.

Technology

Our Technology and equipment for various possibilities

Augmented Reality Glasses

Augmented Reality has been one of the technologies used most both in our research projects and in students' software projects or theses. After the concept and first technologies have already been introduced in the 1990s, the release of wearable glasses from various manufacturers has finally opened the possibility to explore this new interaction space.

Voice Interaction

Another interaction technology that has been explored more and more in our lab is voice-based interaction. Therefore, we have several "smart speakers" and "voice-assistant" enabled devices, such as Amazon Alexa devices, that can be used in projects.

Eyetracking

Eyetracking technology allows us to track the user's eye gaze. This can be very informative when studying interaction, e.g. in collaborative environments with experiments or usability tests. But it can also be used to create gaze-based interaction - where a user can manipulate the digital world simply by using their eye gaze.

Collaboration Tools

As collaboration is not only one of our main research themes but also key to any creative process, the lab is provided with numerous tools and devices to support such creative activities. This starts with analog whiteboards but also encompasses digital devices such as a Microsoft SurfaceHub and software tools such as Mural.

Usability Testing

Usability Testing is a key activity in any user-centred design process and therefore an integral part to Human-Computer Interaction. The lab provides devices and software to run and record usability tests and experiments.
